The Shadows' first EP in their own right, The Shadows, was released in January 1961 and quickly hit the No.1 spot in the EP Chart.
The record came in a glossy colour picture sleeve boasting an action photo of the Shads. The carefully placed vertical artwork on the lower front cover manages to conceal Cliff Richard, who appears in the original photograph.
The sleeve notes were supplied by Derek Johnson, a respected writer for the popular music paper New Musical Express.
The EP was also issued in Ireland, South Africa, Australia, India, Spain and New Zealand in 1961, giving overseas fans the chance to hear the Shadows' latest recordings.
In 1963 both mono and stereo versions of the EP were reissued in the UK. The original sleeves and catalogue no.s were retained but the Columbia label had changed from green/silver to blue/black.
In 1982 The Shadows was released as a 12" vinyl EP in Holland (EMI K062Z 07613). It was volume 3 in a reissue series entitled 'The Cliff Richard & The Shadows EP Collection' which also included Thunderbirds Are Go EP and The Boys, to name just two.
The LP debut for the quartet of tracks was also in 1961 on the South African album Rockin' Guitars (mono 33 JSX 11023).
Mustang, Theme from Shane, Shotgun and Theme from Giant didn't appear on a UK album until the release of Mustang (MFP 5266 - stereo) in October 1972.
Eighteen years later in 1990, all 4 stereo mixes were included on the UK CD compilation The Shadows The EP Collection (See-For-Miles - SEE CD 246).
Now in 2010, all four recordings are readily available on CD.

With their version of Jerry Lordan's Apache still riding the charts, the Shads entered the studios on Wednesday 24th August 1960 to record their second Lordan original, Jerry's co-penned Mustang.
The version used on the EP (take 14) was recorded during a Cliff Richard session on Tuesday 20th September 1960. Therefore we assume that any previous takes of Mustang, especially those taped on 24th August, were thought to be unsuitable.
In France during the early 1960s, Mustang was issued on three different formats.
As a single Mustang / The Boys (SCRF 621), on the EP Dance On With The Shadows (ESDF 1457) and on the LP Hurrah for The Shadows (mono FPX 240).

Also taped on Wednesday 24th August 1960 was their interpretation of the theme from the classic western fillm Shane, starring Alan Ladd. According to the group themselves there were no overdubs prior to Foot Tapper in '63 so I wonder who's providing the clip-clopping sounds on the record?
SHOTGUN
Composed by: Jon Allen (actually Hank, Bruce and Jet)
Recording Dates:
5th September 1960
Recording Studio:
Studio 2/1a - Abbey Road
Recording Engineers:
Malcolm Addey
Session Times:
2pm - 5pm

Shotgun was recorded on Monday 5th September 1960. Composer Jon Allen was actually a pseudonym for Hank, Bruce & Jet.
The tune was a late addition to the EP's tracklisting because FBI was originally scheduled to be the first track on side two.
An official Columbia amendment (dated 18.10.60) suggested it be replaced by Shotgun.
FBI was held back and went on to become the Shads' third hit single, reaching #6 on the chart in February 1961.
Over in Germany Columbia issued Shotgun / Lonesome Fella as a 45rpm (C 22 226) in July 1962.
Both titles were also issued in Finland (Columbia DYC 113), providing The Shadows with their second single release in that country.

Between June and December 1960 Cliff and The Shadows were appearing at the London Palladium theatre in a production called STARS IN THEIR EYES. It was after the evening performance on Thursday 6th October 1960 that the boys entered Abbey Road Studios for a midnight recording session. They had assured Columbia that such a late session would provide the correct atmosphere to cut the sinister Man of Mystery.
Another track laid down during that session was the Theme From Giant, the title track from the movie of the same name.
With its dampened guitar notes and acoustic rhythm guitar, it so typifies that classic Shadows sound of those early days.
Tragically, 'Giant' proved to be James Dean's last film.
